VORN Awards: Showcasing the Future of Adaptive Fashion
In an era when fashion is recognized as a form of self-expression, the VORN Awards stand out as a beacon for inclusivity. Co-hosted by Zalando and VORN—The Berlin Fashion Hub during Berlin Fashion Week, this year's event celebrated the remarkable strides being made in adaptive fashion, an industry often overlooked but vital for many.
"It was a beautiful evening with a wonderful atmosphere. I met many interesting people, and as an amputee, I was happy to be represented in the adaptive designs. Next time, I hope the clothing will be showcased in a fashion show, with models wearing their adaptive designs." Hulya Marquardt.
The VORN Awards celebrated diversity and inclusion in the third edition of the Design Academy program. This initiative, a collaboration between VORN, Zalando, and Ottobock, aims to transform the fashion industry through inclusive, adaptive fashion. The event provided a platform to showcase the designs of ten selected fashion designer finalists. Each designer received a scholarship to work alongside industry professionals and was paired with individuals with disabilities to co-create adaptive fashion garments. The adaptive designs included classic styles such as trench coats, black dresses, and easy zip-up vests for wheelchair users, as well as lingerie and garments designed for prosthesis users.

Ottobock ambassadors and community members with various disabilities were excited to partner with fashion designers, helping to create garments that prioritize functionality while addressing the unique needs and fashion desires of people with disabilities. Fashion designer Svitlana Volkova, whose father lost a limb, collaborated with Jorg Schmidtke, an above-knee amputee, and expressed her passion for adaptive fashion: "It upsets me that clothing can cause such pain and distress; I want to do what I can to create adaptive fashion that brings joy to people." Jorg, who loves a challenge and has a passion for skydiving, co-created and showcased their denim jeans at the event. He added, "I am pleased that brands and designers are working with our community and discussing our needs and desires to create adaptive fashion that is functional, comfortable, and stylish."
Marcus Lauden, an adaptive model, wheelchair user, and Paralympic tennis player, collaborated with designer Charles Lopez, who explained, "As a designer, I can imagine many things, but working with Marcus gave me insights I do not have. Together, we combined our knowledge and created something very cool—a fashionable, easy-grab, zip-up top for people with limited upper body and limb movements." Marcus expressed his enthusiasm for his part in the collaboration: "I loved working with Charles. It was truly fulfilling to see how minor but essential modifications can make a significant difference in everyday fashionwear. Companies like Zalando are finding solutions for adaptive clothing suitable for people with disabilities. Being part of this experience was an absolute honor, and I am excited to see how the fashion world continues to evolve towards greater inclusivity."
Collaborations like those showcased at the VORN Awards ensure that the future of adaptive fashion looks promising. Everyone involved should take pride in positively bridging gaps, raising awareness, and celebrating adaptive fashion. As someone who has worked as a model in the industry since 2008, I am excited to see what the future holds for adaptive fashion. I hope for clever fabrics and innovative designs that eliminate the separation of people with disabilities into a different fashion category, leading to a truly inclusive adaptive fashion fit for all bodies.
