Genium X4 - a facelift or a technical innovation?
At this year's OTWorld Trade Fair in Leipzig, Germany, Ottobock presented the latest member of the Genium MPK family: the Genium X4. The Genium X3 is already globally renowned as one of the best microprocessor knees available for active amputees, so the question we all want to know is, what is the difference between the X3 and the X4? Has the X3 model merely received a facelift, or have its functions been significantly upgraded and improved?
Many users and visitors I spoke to at OT World were surprised that the developers had improved the X3, given its already remarkable innovative features. What more could they possibly achieve? The focus in developing the X4 was on enhancing fluidity and functionality in the knee joint, always with the user in mind. The main aim was to minimize or compensate for deficiencies, allowing walking to feel as natural as possible from the very first step. Users no longer have to think about every movement, even subconsciously, creating a fluid and natural walking experience at all times. With the evolved Genium X4, the developers have come closer to achieving this.
Features of the New MPK Knee:
Optimized Uphill Walking: Makes walking uphill step over step more efficient and conserves energy so the user can walk further without getting too tired.
Start-to-Walk Function: From the first step, the knee knows what to do; there is no longer a straight knee into a step - starting and stopping is much smoother and more natural.
Improved Stance Phase Support and Dynamic Backward Movement: Provides stability when standing still for extended periods, maintaining balance effortlessly.
Exceptionally Smooth, Fluid Gait: Adapts to various environments, from navigating confined spaces or crowds, riding an escalator, stepping backward to pull open a heavy door, wading through water, walking through long grass or sand on the beach, or hiking uneven terrain.
New Intuitive Cycling Feature: Without activating the MyMode function (X3), the microprocessor knee automatically detects the start and end of the cycling movement and adjusts the resistance in real-time.
Extended Battery Life: Similar to the X3, it offers up to five days of battery life but has a fast charging option for on-the-go use.
Waterproof and Corrosion-Resistant: Fully waterproof in water, just like the X3.
Customizable Cover Options: Available in various styles to replicate the natural shape of the leg and suit individual style.
"Being in crowded spaces can be a challenge. Step. Stop. Another step. Avoid a person. Step back. It can get really exhausting when you have to think about every move. But not with the Genium X4. It moves smoothly and intuitively. I don't think about it anymore. I just move my limbs as I need to, and I trust my knee to do the rest. If I use the escalator, I just step off; it doesn't matter which foot I put first. Starting to walk is truly amazing. Another feature I really enjoy is the intuitive cycling feature. I can just hop on the bike and start pedaling. No preset is needed, and I can stop anytime. When I put my prosthetic leg on the ground, it automatically reacts. It knows I have stopped. It really feels so much safer." Statement from Laura in this video
To get a true feeling for this prosthesis, you have to test it personally. The Genium X4 will be available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands starting in June 2024, and will be gradually rolled out in additional countries.
In the following weeks we will share more information on the Genium X4. If you liked this article, please comment or like below :)
